Florian Thoma (23) from Switzerland and Akhil Rabindra (22) from India will start with an Aston Martin Vantage GT4 from PROsport Performance in the GT4 European Series and make the first of two driver duos. As an official race partner of Aston Martin Racing (AMR), the team of Christoph Esser will enter two of the brand new Vantage GT4 in the GT4 European Championship as well as in the new ADAC GT4 Germany, furthermore two Vantage GT3 in the ADAC GT Masters.
“Florian Thoma and Akhil Rabindra are a young, ambitious duo. Akhil brings already experience from GT4 including the European Series, Florian we already know from the ADAC TCR Germany”, says Christoph Esser, team principal of PROsport Performance based in Wiesemscheid, Germany, located near the Nürburgring. “We, too, know and appreciate the GT4 European Series, which we have been racing since 2013 and won both team and drivers titles in 2016 as one of PROsport Performance’s greatest achievements.”
Born on 13 December 1995 in Biel, Switzerland, Florian Thoma competed in the ADAC TCR Germany in 2017 and 2018. Already on his debut weekend he scored his first victory. Also last season he started with a TCR victory at the 24-hour race in Dubai. Thoma, who has the FIA silver status and also the A permit for the Nürburgring Nordschleife, began his motorsport career already 2003 in karting.
“I’m really looking forward to the new challenge with Aston Martin and PROsport Performance. The new Aston Martin Vantage GT4 not only looks really good, I’m also convinced that together we can make a good development process and be able to fight in the front of the field. PROsport Performance has already achieved a lot in GT4, so I am sure that we are in a good position”, Florian Thoma looks forward to his first GT season.
While the GT4 is a new territory for Florian Thoma, Akhil Rabindra has already driven two seasons in the GT4, 2017 and 2018 in the European Series and 2017 in the British Championship. Born on May 22, 1996 in Bangalore, India, Rabindra’s career began 2011 with a national rookie title in karting. 2013 he was part of the FIA Young Driver Academy. In 2014 he was runner-up in the national Formula BMW, before moving from Asia to Europe in 2017 and being a part of the McLaren GT Driver Academy in the same year.
“The GT4 European Series is a very competitive championship, in which I learned a lot during the past season. The experience will certainly help a lot in the new season with Aston Martin, but even more valuable is the experience that PROsport Performance has gained in this and other racing series. I am convinced that the new Vantage GT4 also has great potential, as have all the vehicles Aston Martin has brought to the track so far in its unique history.”
There are six races in the calendar of the GT4 European Series. To kick off, the European Championship, introduced in 2006 and part of the Blancpain GT Series organized by SRO Motorsports Group in close collaboration with the FIA, will be held from 12 to 14 April at the Royal Park of Monza in Italy. This will be followed by races in Brands Hatch, England (04/05 May), in Paul Ricard, France (31 May to 2 June), in Misano, Italy (28 to 30 June) and in Zandvoort, The Netherlands (12 to 14 May) July), before the finale will be held on the home track of PROsport Performance from 30th August to 1st September, on the Nürburgring Grand Prix circuit.
